India played 29 T20Is in 2022 so far. Of these, the Men in Blue lost seven games. Barring one washed out, they won all the remaining matches. India won 21 matches, with a win percentage of over 70. This impressive achievement points light on the domination they displayed in the field.

India won the bilateral series against the Windies (twice), Sri Lanka, Ireland, England, and Australia in 2022. The five-match series against South Africa was drawn level at 2-2. The only disappointment this year was their Super 4 exit in the Asia Cup. Going by this momentum, can Rohit and his team continue their winning habit to the showpiece event?

What are the advantages of India?

The major plus is the batting form of the top four – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav. They have a key role in taking India to post good totals. The strategy is that one among them plays the anchor or aggressive role, depending on the situation.

India hasn’t zeroed in their number five and seven batters, and the candidates are Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, and Axar Patel. Two among these three may get the last nod to play in Australia in the first game. All-rounder Hardik Pandya and the balance he offers to the team as a hard hitter and fourth seamer, are also useful.

India is one of the major teams that have tried out over 25 players in T20s this year. As a result, most have received their chances of playing and getting into the groove. The additional experience of playing in IPL, and gaining international exposure has also helped, as it gives a peek into the opposition players and their details.

Concerns for India: Death bowling and fielding

India was one of the best fielding units under skipper Virat Kohli. The former skipper, coach Ravi Shastri, and fielding coach R Sridhar developed a no-tolerance approach to fielding standards, and it helped the team during their tenure. At present, India faces an issue with fielding standards. They dropped over 10 catches in the bilateral series against Australia. Fielding is crucial in Australia where it can have a big impact on the outcome of a game.

India’s giving away of runs in the death overs is another area for which the team needs to work on and find a solution. They would hope Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel get their rhythm back and deliver in those crucial overs.

Rahul Dravid and Rohit have set a solid foundation for the team and continued the winning culture of the previous group, led by Virat Kohli. They will look to turn their bilateral series excellence into complete domination in the T20 World Cup starting on October 16.
