The Tallest Footballers in History: Giants of the Game
Football isn’t exactly basketball, but every so often you get players who look like they wandered onto the pitch from the NBA. From goalkeepers who can pluck crosses out of thin air to strikers who make defenders feel like toddlers, these are the tallest footballers in history and yes, some of them have cult-hero status simply because of their height.
1. Simon Bloch Jørgensen – 6ft 11in (210 cm)
The undisputed king of height in football. The Danish goalkeeper stands at a jaw-dropping 6ft 11in, making him the tallest professional footballer ever recorded. He’s played for lower-league English sides and is basically a skyscraper in gloves.
2. Kristof van Hout – 6ft 10in (208 cm)
The Belgian goalkeeper has played for Genk and Willem II, and he’s often remembered more for his sheer size than his saves. At 6ft 10in, he looked like he needed his own custom-made dugout seat.
3. Paul Millar – 6ft 10in (208 cm)
Another 6ft 10in giant, the Scottish striker played for Elgin City and Deveronvale. Imagine being a League Two defender and seeing this mountain running at you. Corners and long throws basically turned into set-piece artillery with him in the box.
4. Tonny Brogaard – 6ft 9in (206 cm)
Denmark clearly has a factory for tall footballers. Brogaard was a goalkeeper who spent time at Doncaster Rovers but struggled to adapt to the professional game. Still, at 6ft 9in, he didn’t exactly need to jump to catch a cross.
5. Vanja Iveša – 6ft 9in (206 cm)
The Croatian goalkeeper made over 100 appearances for Istra 1961 in his homeland. Fun fact: he played into his 40s, meaning his 6ft 9in frame was intimidating goalkeepers across two generations.
6. Lacina Traoré – 6ft 8in (203 cm)
Finally, a striker most fans will remember. The Ivorian forward, nicknamed “The Big Tree”, played for Monaco, Everton (brief loan), and CSKA Moscow. Standing at 6ft 8in, he was a walking mismatch in every aerial duel.
7. Costel Pantilimon – 6ft 8in (203 cm)
The Romanian goalkeeper was a familiar sight in the Premier League with Manchester City and Sunderland. At 6ft 8in, he was one of the tallest players in top-flight football and could practically touch the crossbar without leaving the ground.
Why Height Isn’t Everything
Being tall in football is a double-edged sword. Sure, you dominate in the air and look terrifying at set-pieces, but pace and agility often suffer. Still, players like Traoré and Pantilimon carved out memorable careers and Jørgensen gets the trivia crown as the tallest ever.
