Thailand To Debut As Women’s Volleyball World Championship Host

In a major landmark, Thailand is set to host the FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship for the first time ever. This also marks the first time that the tournament is taking place in Southeast Asia. 

This is the 20th edition of the championship and the tournament will get underway from August 22 to September 7, 2025, across four major cities: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The competition will feature 32 national teams from around the globe, divided into eight pools. All final-round matches will be held at the Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok. With a capacity of over 6,000, Huamark has regularly hosted events on the Volleyball Nations League calendar, including the 2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals, capping off a record-breaking series.

On July 21, Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Thailand Volleyball Association (TVA), confirmed the country’s readiness to host the event during a press conference.

Currently ranked 20th in the world, Thailand’s women’s volleyball team will compete against top-ranked teams, including Italy (1st), Brazil (2nd), and Poland (3rd).

Serbia are the reigning Women’s Volleyball World Championship champion, with the previous tournament held in the Netherlands and Poland in 2022.

FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship

The tournament is an international volleyball competition contested by the senior women’s national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport’s global governing body. The initial gap between championships was variable, but since 1970 it is being held every four years. The tournament will be held biennially starting in 2025.

The 19 World Championship tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Soviet Union are the most succesfull team with five titles. The other World Championship winners are Japan and Cuba, with three titles each; China, Russia and Serbia, with two titles each; and Italy and the United States, with one title each.
