‘That flip for 6 is incredible. ‘He’s got all the shots,’ says Gavaskar of IND’s ‘late bloomer’ in resolving the middle-order troubles.

Suryakumar has long been a selector’s doormat thanks to his outstanding performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but he finally broke into the side last year before making the T20 World Cup roster. He has only played seven ODIs so far, but he has put up outstanding stats as a middle-order alternative, accumulating 261 runs at 65.25 with two half-centuries. Gavaskar, who was impressed with Suryakumar’s batting in the middle order, remarked that while Suryakumar was a late bloomer, he made the most of his domestic cricket experience in making the transition to international cricket.

The renowned hitter also believes that the 31-year-old has all of the shots in his arsenal, and that it is his temperament test that has distinguished him from the rest of his competitors for a seat in the middle order. Gavaskar said, “We all know what he’s capable of; that flick for a six is a tremendous shot.” Because the bowler hasn’t bowled a horrible ball; he just has a terrific skill to whip the ball for a six. He has all of the shots. But it’s been his attitude that has stood the test in the previous few of games. And temperament, in my opinion, distinguishes men from boys. And it has undoubtedly distinguished him from the rest.”
