The Beginning of the WWE Championships
Let’s know about the WWE championship, the history, and the best players who made a history in the championship.
About the WWE Championship
The WWE Championship was initially given to Buddy Rogers in 1963 when he triumphed against Antonino Rocca in a tournament final. Since then, the most well-known figures in the industry, like Bruno Sammartino, Andre the Giant, Bret Hart, The Rock, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, have held the championship.
History: WWE Championship
In 1963, the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) Championship was originally launched, predating the current WWE Championship. After the WWF and the NWA ended their alliance in 1979, the championship was renamed the WWF Championship. The title was combined with the World Heavyweight Championship and given the moniker WWE Undisputed Championship in 2001, after the purchase of WCW.
The business changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002, and it divided its roster into the RAW and SmackDown brands. The World Heavyweight Championship was subsequently given to RAW, while the WWE Championship was reserved for the SmackDown brand.
Randy Orton defeated John Cena on December 15, 2013, to unify the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the high-profile live event Tables, Ladders, and Chairs. The World Heavyweight Championship was retired and given the new moniker WWE World Heavyweight Championship as part of the unification process.
When WWE made the decision to divide its brands once again on June 27, 2016, the championship was once more called the WWE Championship. It was given to Friday Night SmackDown exclusively, while RAW received a championship called the Universal Championship.
WWE: Major Developments
The WWE Championship replaced both of the major Championships as the primary prize of Monday Night RAW after Crown Jewel 2019. 54 Champions have had 146 acknowledged reigns as of September 2022. Buddy Rodgers was the inaugural WWE Champion.
Bruno Sammartino, a member of the WWE Hall of Fame, has the longest single and total reigns with 2,083 and 4,040 days, respectively. Thirteen times, John Cena has won the WWE Championship.
Eight superstars, including Bruno Sammartino (twice), Hulk Hogan, Pedro Morales, Bob Backlund, Randy Savage, John Cena, CM Punk, and AJ Styles, have held the Championship for a year or more. Look into the complete list of players and their performances here.
