The Detroit Pistons Team Profile and Analysis: Eastern Conference’s Central Division

The National Basketball Association’s Eastern Conference has three divisions, one of which is called the Central Division (NBA). The division has five clubs: the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Chicago Bulls. Since every team, except the Cavaliers, was a member of the Midwest Division in the 1970s, the Central Division now largely resembles that division.

The division was established when the league increased from 14 to 17 clubs at the beginning of the 1970–71 season, including the Buffalo Braves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers. The league split into two conferences, the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference, with two divisions in each conference. The Atlanta Hawks, Baltimore Bullets, Cincinnati Royals, and Cleveland Cavaliers were the first four teams to join the Central Division. The Bullets and the Royals came from the Eastern Division, while the Hawks came from the Western Division.

The Bucks, with eleven, have won the most Central Division championships. With nine championships, the Pistons are second on the list. The Central Division was home to thirteen NBA champions: the Bulls won six titles, the Pistons three, the Bucks two, the Bullets one, and the Cavaliers one. Except for the 2003–04 Pistons and the 1977–78 Bullets, they were all division champions. The division’s five teams made the playoffs in the 2005–06 season. The Milwaukee Bucks are the newest division champions. Four out of every five teams in the Central Division have won a championship, making it the division with the highest percentage of teams that have done so; the Pacers are the only franchise that has never done so.

It plays home games at Little Caesars Arena and is an Eastern Conference Central Division member. The Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons franchise was established in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and it joined the NBL in 1941. The Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, who played under the moniker Fort Wayne Pistons, won two NBL titles but lost two NBA Finals. The Detroit Pistons won three NBA championships in 1989, 1990, and 2004.

The Zollner Pistons, founded in 1941 and based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, were originally members of the National Basketball League (NBL), where they won two league championships. Fred Zollner owned the club and was a maker of auto parts (1944–45). The Pistons dropped “Zollner” from their name and joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) for the 1948–1949 season. In 1949, the BAA and NBL merged to become the NBA, and the Pistons became a part of that league. In 1955 and 1956, the Pistons reached the NBA finals but were defeated both times.
