TNPL 2023: Ashwin reviews 3rd umpire’s decision

4 Min Read

Ravichandran Ashwin once again uses his wits and does something that no one would have imagined. Ashwin was captaining Dindigul Dragons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2023 when he did something that no one had seen before. The veteran spinner reviewed on the same ball which earlier reviewed by the batter.

Ashwin had come on to bowl the 13th over in the first innings when the whole review fiasco happened. The skipper was bowling over the wicket when he beat the  Ba11sy Trichy’s batter, Rajkumar. There was a big sound and Ashwin and the wicketkeeper, Baba Indrajith straightaway thought that there was an edge. The umpire had given Rajkumar out who immediately reviewed the on-field decision.

The third umpire saw that there was a clear gap between the bat and the ball and the Snickometer had picked up the sound of the bat hitting the ground rather than it hitting the ball. Ashwin who was unhappy with the third umpire’s decision reviewed once again. The third umpire repeated the whole process once again and stayed with his decision of not out.

Ashwin’s take on it

The Dindigul Dragons’ captain was asked about the challenging an already reviewed decision in the post-match interview. Ashwin said, “DRS is new in the tournament. There was a spike just before the ball passed the bat. I was not quite happy, I thought they’d see with a different angle.”

Rest of the match

Ba11sy Trichy batted first and their skipper, Ganga Sridhar Raju while opening the batting top-scored with 48 runs off 41 balls. Raju did not receive any great support from the other end as wickets fell at regular intervals. Rajkumar amidst all the controversy surrounding him played a great knock of 39 runs in 22 balls. For Dindigul Dragons Varun Chakaravarthy, Suboth Bhati and skipper Ashwin were the pick of the bowlers. Chakaravarthy took 3 wickets in 4 overs while conceding 21 runs and right-arm medium pacer, Bhati picked up two wickets in 3.1 overs and went for just 8 runs. Ashwin picked up 2 wickets while conceding 26 runs, he even bowled a maiden. A complete bowling performance helped the Dragons to restrict their opponents to a score of 120 runs.

In the second innings, the Dragons got off to a good start as opener Shivam Singh scored 46 runs off 30 balls. Baba Indrajith batting at number 3 scored 22 runs off 23 balls and Adithya Ganesh batting at number 4 scored 20 runs off 21 balls. Bhati after a great performance with the ball in hand played a great hard-hitting cameo with the bat as he scored 19 runs in just 8 balls. For the Trichy team, T Natarajan, R Silambarasan, R Alexander and Antony Dhas took one wicket each. But a poor performance with the bat always meant that they would be on the losing side. The Dragons chased their modest total of 120 easily in just 14.2 overs.
