Tokyo Paralympics 2020: Not a podium finish for India’s Rubina Francis

India’s 22-year-old para pistol shooter Rubina Francis finished at 7th position in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 final on Tuesday

At the ongoing Paralympics which is held in Tokyo, India till now have 7 medals and ranks 28th in the medal table. Day 7 of the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 began for the Indian contingent, where Rubina Francis qualified for the final of Shooting P2 – Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1.

Hailing from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh – Rubina Francis was born with an impairment to her leg. She first took up the sport in 2015 in Jabalpur at the Gun For Glory Shooting Academy, where she was discovered through a talent search done by the Academy. Then she made her International debut for India at the 2017 World Cup in Dubai, UAE.

In the final, Rubina Francis was eliminated as she finished in 7th place with 128.5 total points at Asaka Shooting Range. The Indian finished at the bottom as only eight athletes qualify for the final; the result didn’t go as the Indian would have planned. In Series 1, she started good with a shot of 10.6 but it was her fourth shot of 6.6 which was disappointing, and after that couldn’t do much about it.

With this performance, Rubina Francis’s journey at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Games came to an end. The shooter had qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics Games 2020 after winning a gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Para Sport Cup in Peru where Rubina set a world record as she scored 238.1 points breaking the previous record set by Aysegul Pehlivanlar from Turkey.
