UFC 321 finished in chaos when Tom Aspinall unleashed on supporters after a surprise no-contest outcome in the headlining bout against Ciryl Gane. The heavyweight title fight, among the most highly anticipated bouts of the year, ended suddenly and disappointingly in the second round when an unintentional eye poke forced Aspinall to withdraw from the contest.

Eye Poke Halts UFC 321 Main Event

The main event of UFC 321 between Ciryl Gane and Tom Aspinall started with furious exchanges. Both the fighters reminded us of their world-class striking, Gane landing crisp jabs, while Aspinall retaliated with powerful leg kicks and clean punches.

However, after the clock read 4:35 left in Round 1, the bout was stopped when Gane accidentally poked Aspinall in the eye. Aspinall was given ample time to recover and thankfully had a ringside physician assess his condition, but the outcome was still that Aspinall was not seeing properly and therefore ruled a no-contest.

Tom Aspinall Confronts UFC 321 Crowd Over Boos

Instead of being sympathised with by the bad luck of the mishap, Tom Aspinall was booed by portions of the crowd a development that evidently enraged the heavyweight titleholder.

During a fiery post-bout interview with Daniel Cormier, Aspinall did not mince words:

“Guys, I just got poked knuckle deep in the eyeball. What the f*** are you booing for? I didn’t do the poke… This is bullshit, the fight was just getting going, complete bullshit. I’m pissed off,” Tom Aspinall said in the post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.

The raw emotion from the British fighter illustrated his frustration with fans who appeared to dispute that he shouldn’t have continued despite having a genuine injury.

Emotional Reactions from Both Fighters

Following the no contest, Ciryl Gane expressed remorse over the accidental foul, saying:

“I feel sorry at first, I’m very sorry for the fans. I’m sorry for Tom Aspinall. I’m sorry for myself.”

The moment underscored the emotional toll for both fighters particularly Aspinall, who faced both physical pain and public scrutiny in front of thousands of fans.

Fan Debate: Safety vs Entertainment

The situation at UFC 321 soon set social media abuzz. Most of the fans rallied around Tom Aspinall, noting that no fighter should risk compromising his or her eyesight permanently to appease the audience.

Others were, however, dismayed by the anticlimactic finish to what seemed like it was going to be an electrifying heavyweight bout. Experts have since supported that Aspinall made the correct decision, keeping his health and well-being paramount over the showmanship.

What’s Next for Tom Aspinall After UFC 321?

The no contest finish has left the UFC heavyweight division empty, unsure if they should go ahead and schedule Aspinall and Gane for a rematch. Despite such a troubling conclusion, Aspinall’s quick reflexes and honest reaction contribute to solidifying his position as the champion that will say what he thinks and believes and does not pretend to be something he is not.
