Women’s hockey has an interesting history dating back to the 1800s. The first Women’s hockey club was formed in 1887 and was named the Molesey Ladies.

The inaugural Women’s Hockey World Cup took place in 1947 which marked a significant step in international field hockey competition for women.

The sport was first included in the Olympic Games in 1980 where the Zimbabwe women’s team won the gold. Recently the FIH Pro League was introduced which evolved the sport from an informal play to a renowned sport all over the world.

Today, Women’s hockey is a major sport played by almost every country. The FIH Pro League is going on the floor in February, but let’s not forget all the players who made this sport reach the sky.

Luciana Aymar

Luciana Paula Aymar is an Argentinian player and is considered one of the most iconic players of all time. She earned the nickname of “La Maga” (The Magician) due to her exceptional skills in maneuvering past the opponents. She has won four Olympic medals, two silvers and two bronze.

She also led the national team to victory in two Women’s World Cups in 2002 and 2010. She also helped her team secure six Champions Trophy titles throughout her career. She also contributed to winning seven gold medals at the Pan American Games. She also holds the record for the most FIH Player of the Year awards which is eight times.

Ellen Hoog

Ellen Hoog is a world-renowned Dutch player who won two Olympic gold medals and a silver in 2016. She was also a part of the winning team of the Women’s Hockey World Cup twice in 2006 and 2014. She also contributed her team to winning the Women’s EuroHockey Championship thrice. She also bagged the Champions Trophy title twice in 2004 and 2005. She was named the Best Player of the Tournament and the FIH Player of the Year.

Maddie Hinch

Maddie Hinch is an English player known for her contribution as a goalkeeper. She owns an Olympic gold and a bronze medal. She also bagged gold, silver, and bronze in the Commonwealth Games. She won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year thrice in 2016,2017 and 2018. She also won a bronze medal in the 2017 World League Semi-Final and EuroHockey Championship.

Stacey Michelsen

Stacey is a notable New Zealand field player who represented her country in 3 Olympics. She also won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in 2010, a silver in 201,4, and a gold in 2018. She was awarded FIH Young Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year. Throughout her career, she played 297 matches and served as a captain of the Black Sticks.
