In one-day international matches, bowlers are given undue importance throughout the innings. When it comes to the line, bowlers are always looked up to. It is for the bowlers that even One-Day becomes exciting to watch; bowlers have their appearance and spin on display in front of the world.
When bowlers rack up wickets and give their team an advantage in the game, it is one of those wonderful moments that changes the momentum. The 50-over format requires bowlers to maintain their stamina, spirit, and overall bowling ability.
While top seeds such as Adam Zampa have gone wicketless in 2023, underdogs such as Sompal Kami are emerging as the new face of pace in international cricket. Siraj is also proving to be a valuable asset to India’s bowling squad.
Bowlers from the most underappreciated countries face off against the top-seeded speedsters. In the fast-paced world of cricket, the line, length, pace, and techniques are constantly changing.
As the 2023 ODI World Cup approaches later this year, all competing nations will be fighting to showcase their best bowling lineup. Here are the top five ODI wicket-takers since 2022:
#5 Sandeep Lamichhane (Nepal)
Sandeep Lamichane, 22, is a rising Nepalese bowling prodigy. He is widely regarded as the best spinner of his generation despite being only 22 years old. With the country nearly worshipping Lamichhane, he has continued to live up to the expectations of his home crowd.
He is among the top wicket-takers with 36 wickets since 2022. Thirty of these 36 wickets came in the first three months of 2023 alone. Nepal recently regained its ODI title.
Since the start of the season, the national team has been playing matches on a regular basis, and the players are working hard to bring back the glory days of Nepal cricket. Lamichhane has a 4.36 economy while averaging 15.03 this year. With a strike rate of 20.6, he appears unstoppable.
#4 Bernard Scholtz (Namibia)
Scholtz is from Namibia, a team that continues to astound cricket fans with their ever-improving play. The last two years have been exceptional for Namibia, and Scholtz has played a significant role in this success. Slow-paced deliveries by the 32-year-old left-arm bowler render the batsman unreadable.
He has already taken 37 wickets between 2022 and 2023. His 2022 season was his best, with 32 wickets in a single year. The tall Namibian is still finding his way into 2023, but he promises to be the side’s riding boat.
He played in 20 matches, averaging just over 16 minutes per game and a strike rate of 31.78 percent. His best figures of 5 for 22 speak volumes about his potential. In only six matches in 2023, his economy remains at 3.71.
#3 Mohammed Siraj (India)
The entire country applauds Siraj’s comeback. While the selectors are pleased to back the pacer, the Indian team is almost ready to name him as the leading bowler for the upcoming World Cup.
With 41 wickets in the 2022-2023 season, Siraj is the third-highest ODI wicket-taker. His economy in the six matches he has played in 2023 is 3.99. With 17 wickets in the 2023 season, his strike rate is 15.6, which is great news for the Indian team.
In the 15 matches he played last year, he took 24 wickets with an economy of 4.61. The 29-year-old is one of India’s brightest prospects in cricket.
#2 Ruben Trumpelmann (Namibia)
Namibia’s new spearhead, Trumpelmann, is making waves with his fine line and length. The South African-born Namibian left-hander is having his best season yet.
Trumpelmann has 44 wickets to his name since 2022. He took 15 wickets in only six innings in 2023, with an economy of 4.26 and an average of 15.26. The 25-year-old is undoubtedly Namibia cricket’s next big name.
In the first two and a half months of 2023, he already has a fifer. Trumpelmann also took three crucial wickets against the UAE during the Nepal tri-series. He is demonstrating to the world the will to fight through consistent hard work.
#1 Sompal Kami (Nepal)
Sompal Kami is another well-known Nepalese cricketer. As he is given the opportunity to showcase his talent on a national level, he is exceeding all Nepalese expectations. Even in Nepal’s T20 league, he was a top wicket-taker.
Since 2022, his lethal deliveries have netted him 46 wickets. He will be the highest wicket-taker until March 2023. Kami had an economy of 4.98 in the 20 games he played.
He finished with 35 wickets and a strike rate of 27.4. Kami, at the age of 27, is genuinely raising the standard of cricket in Nepal. His right arm fast bowling has been nothing short of spectacular.
Nepal made history by qualifying for the ICC World Cup qualifiers thanks to him and Lamichhane’s consistent performance.
