England, who played the first Test match in 1877 against Australia, has given the world many great batsmen. Even today, when we talk about the most centuries in Test cricket, some England names are always in the top list.
If we look at the stats, only two England batsmen have scored more than 10,000 runs in Test cricket, Alastair Cook and Joe Root. A total of 10 English players have scored more than 20 Test centuries, and only two of them have made more than 30 centuries in the longest format. Between 1964 and 1982, Geoff Boycott played for England as a dependable opener. He played 108 Test matches and scored 8114 runs at an average of 47.72. During this time, he made 22 centuries. His highest score was an unbeaten 246 runs.
Ian Bell also scored 22 centuries. From 2004 to 2015, he played 118 Tests and scored 7727 runs at an average of 42.69. He also hit 46 half-centuries. His best score was 235 runs, which he made against India in 2011 at The Oval.
Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen made 23 centuries in his Test career. From 2005 to 2014, he played 104 Tests and scored 8181 runs at an average of 47.28. He also made 35 half-centuries. His aggressive style made him stand out.
Alastair Cook, one of England’s most successful Test captains, played 161 Test matches from 2006 to 2018. He scored 12,472 runs at an average of 45.35 with 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries. His highest Test score was 294 runs against India in 2011.
Joe Root is at the top of this list with 38 centuries in Test cricket. So far he has played 157 Test matches and scored more than 13,300 runs with an average of over 51. He has also hit 66 half-centuries. He holds the record for most centuries in Test cricket among England players and is also among the top 5 century-makers in the world.
England cricket has always produced world class Test batsmen. Names like Joe Root and Alastair Cook continue to lead in records related to the most centuries in Test cricket. These players have not only scored hundreds but have also carried forward the legacy of Test cricket. It will be interesting to see if any new England batsman can break these records in the future.
