1. Kurumi Yonao- Naoko Fukuman (Japan) vs Greysia Polii-Nitya Krishinda Maheswari (Indonesia)

The longest badminton match in history that has been recorded is the one between the Japanese duo of Kurumi Yonao- Naoko Fukuman and Greysia Polii-Nitya Krishinda Maheswari of Indonesia. It was a women’s doubles semifinal match at the Badminton Asia Championships 2016. 

The match went on for 2 hours and 41 minutes, becoming the longest badminton match in the history of BWF. The Japanese pair of Yonao and Fukuman won the grueling three-set game 13-21, 21-19, 24-22.

2. Peter Rasmussen (Denmark) vs. Sun Jun (China)

The second is the list of longest badminton matches was recorded at the IBF World Championships 1997. It was a men’s singles match between Peter Rasmussen of Denmark and Sun Jun of China. It took 2 hours, 4 minutes for the match to complete in which the Danish player won 16-17, 18-13, 15-10 under the old 15-point scoring system.

This was considered the longest men’s singles match ever played and was the longest overall of the 2016 women’s doubles epic. 

3. Luo Ying-Luo Yu (China) vs. Kurumi Yonao- Naoko Fukuman (Japan)

The third match on the list of the longest badminton matches in history is another women’s doubles. The Chinese duo of Luo Ying-Luo Yu took on Kurumi Yonao-Naoko Fukuman of Japan in the quarterfinals of Badminton Asia Championships 2016. 

They are the same duo who would play the longest badminton match in the semifinal of the tournament. 

The match took place for 1 hour, 57 minutes before the Japanese duo emerged as the champions. They registered the victory with a 22-20, 18-21, 21-14 scoreline. 

4. Icuk Sugiarto (Indonesia) vs. Liem Swie King (Indonesia)

It was an Indonesian men’s singles final at the IBF World Championships 1983 in which Icuk Sugiarto took on  Liem Swie King. It went on to become one of the longest badminton matches in history, running for 1 hour and 40 minutes. 

Playing under the old scoring system, Sugiarto won the match 15-10, 15-12, 18-17.

5. P.V. Sindhu (India) vs. Nozomi Okuhara (Japan)

The last in the list is the one between P.V. Sindhu of India and Nozomi Okuhara of Japan. It was a women’s singles final at the BWF World Championships 2017. The duration of the match was recorded at 1 hour and 50 minutes. 

This match has been noted for for its incredible length, high number of long rallies, and sheer intensity. It is widely considered one of the greatest women’s singles finals in history, with Okuhara winning 21-19, 20-22, 22-20.
