The Uganda Cricket Association, along with esteemed partners Uganda Tourism Board, Motor Care, Bar Aviation, and Fireworks advertising, is eagerly anticipating the arrival of the ICC Men’s World Cup trophy on August 26, 2023. The trophy is all set to embark on a captivating journey across various parts of Kampala and Jinja.
Despite not being a contender in the upcoming cricket world cup, Uganda’s fervor for the sport is palpable, with its roots extending from local to international arenas. This remarkable venture underscores Uganda’s remarkable strides in cricket, radiating its impact across diverse cultural and geographical boundaries.
The essence of the ICC’s mission for this tour is to showcase Africa’s rich tapestry of traditional and cultural heritage. Following its arrival on Saturday, the trophy will be received at the India High Commission. Subsequently, on August 27, 2023, the trophy will grace the state house in Entebbe, followed by a highly anticipated cricket festival, where cricket enthusiasts from all walks of life will have the opportunity to witness the trophy up close.
The cricket festival will be a vibrant celebration, featuring an array of activities such as a replica of world cup tournaments, entertainment, bouncing castles, and an inclusive gathering to revel in Uganda’s love for cricket.
The tour’s itinerary commences with the trophy’s introduction to Kampala, followed by a visit to Jinja on August 28, 2023. This leg of the journey, organized in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board and Bar Aviation, will encompass iconic sites such as Murchison Falls, the Source of the Nile, and the Mahatma Gandhi shrine. The tour will culminate on the following day at the Uganda Parliament.
A surge of excitement has already engulfed social media platforms as sports enthusiasts anticipate the arrival of this monumental trophy. The trophy has been endearingly named “Walugembe Nagenda” in tribute to Sam Walusimbi and John Nagenda, the sole Ugandans who participated in the 1975 World Cup in England. Join the wave of excitement by using hashtags like #CricketUganda, #CWC23, #OliOtya, and #WalusimbiNagenda. Stay connected with the Uganda Cricket Association on social media for daily updates.
