UP Yoddhas has appointed Upendra Malik as their head coach for Pro Kabaddi League Season 13 (PKL13). The announcement comes following the team’s underwhelming campaign in Season 12.
Despite retaining their core and acquiring experienced players at the auction, the Yoddhas struggled throughout the campaign. Their on-mat execution never really clicked, and they eventually finished 9th on the points table, failing to even make the top eight.
Jasveer Singh steps down
In the middle of this difficult season came another major development. After the team’s second-last match, head coach Jasveer Singh announced in the post-match press conference that he would be stepping down from his role. Although he coached the side in their final game as well, he confirmed it would be his last match as UP Yoddhas’ head coach.
Jasveer had been with the franchise since Season 6, guiding players not just during the PKL but also in off-season training camps. After seven long years and five playoff appearances, he parted ways with the team- perhaps influenced by the persistent inability to reach the final or win the league.
Recently, Patna Pirates announced that Jasveer will be joining them as their head coach for PKL 13, opening a new chapter in his coaching career.

Upendra Malik takes charge
With Jasveer’s departure, UP Yoddhas have chosen continuity over overhaul. They’ve promoted their assistant coach, Upendra Malik, to the role of head coach. Malik has been part of the setup since Season 10 and has spent the last three years working closely with Jasveer, making him a natural successor.
He will now step into the top job and lead the team into the next season
What fans expect from the new coach
The Yoddhas’ management seems to be signaling that they’re not looking for dramatic shake-ups. By promoting someone who already knows the team’s dynamics and strengths, they hope to maintain stability while still improving performance.
However, fans are eager to see bold decisions from Malik. With the team yet to win a PKL title, Yoddhas would hope that the fresh leadership will finally help them break their trophy drought.
