India’s young opening batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the record books during the ongoing Under-19 World Cup group-stage match against Bangladesh in Bulawayo on Saturday, January 17. The left-handed batter became the first cricketer ever to score a half-century in an Under-19 World Cup match before turning 15.
At just 14 years and 296 days old, Suryavanshi delivered a remarkable performance that highlighted his composure, confidence, and growing reputation in youth cricket.
Quiet Start Against USA, Strong Comeback Against Bangladesh
Suryavanshi had a modest start to the tournament in India’s opening match against the United States of America on Thursday, January 15. In a rain-affected game at Queens Sports Club, India chased a target of 108. Opening the innings alongside Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav managed only 2 runs from 4 balls before getting out. India, however, went on to secure a comfortable six-wicket win.
He made sure to bounce back in style in the very next game.
India in Trouble Early Before Suryavanshi Takes Charge
India had a shaky start after being asked to bat first against Bangladesh. Captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for 6, while Vedant Trivedi was out for a duck, leaving the team struggling at 12 for 2.
Amid the early collapse, Vaibhav Suryavanshi showed impressive maturity beyond his age. He steadied the innings and countered the Bangladesh bowling attack with calm shot selection and smart placement.
Fastest Fifty by a Player Under 15
Vaibhav Suryavanshi reached his half-century in just 30 balls, bringing up the milestone with a single off the sixth ball of the 13th over. With this knock, he became the youngest player in Under-19 World Cup history to score a fifty.
He eventually scored 72 runs off 67 balls, smashing six fours and three sixes. His innings came to an end on the second ball of the 27th over when Iqbal Hossain Emon dismissed him, with Al Fahad completing the catch. He also shared a valuable 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Abhigyan Kundu, which came off 99 balls.
