Virat Kohli: List Of Double Centuries In International Cricket

The veteran right-handed batsman of Team India, Virat Kohli, broke enormous records in his career span. Currently, he has declared retirement from the two formats, Test and T20, after achieving greater heights of success in them. Now he is active in ODIs for Team India and sits at a count of 82 centuries so far in international cricket (25th June, 2025).

He declared retirement from Test cricket on 12th May, 2025, and for the T20 format, he announced on a big stage in a moment where all ICT fans were filled with joy for lifting the trophy of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados against South Africa.

Virat Kohli has smashed 7 double centuries in his career, out of which one was away in Barbados and the rest came in his home country, India. An interesting fact is that all of these double tons were scored in Test format.

1. 200 vs West Indies – July 2016, Antigua

Kohli’s first-ever Test double century came in style as he became the first Indian captain to score a double hundred outside India. His partnership of 168 runs with Ravichandran Ashwin laid the foundation for a commanding win. This innings was a turning point, setting the tone for Kohli’s dominant overseas performances and his aggressive approach as skipper.

2. 211 vs New Zealand – October 2016, Indore

Outcome: India won by 321 runs

Kohli marked his dominance in the first-ever Test at Holkar Stadium with a stunning double ton. His 365-run fourth-wicket stand with Ajinkya Rahane is India’s highest fourth-wicket stand in Tests. Kohli became the first Indian captain to record two Test double hundreds with this.

3. 235 vs England – December 2016, Mumbai

This was Kohli’s third double hundred of 2016, a record for any Indian captain in a calendar year. On a spinning track, Kohli’s grit and technique shone through. A memorable 241-run partnership with Jayant Yadav helped India post a mammoth 631 and seal a huge win.

4. 204 vs Bangladesh – February 2017, Hyderabad

Kohli made history by becoming the first player to score double centuries in four consecutive Test series, surpassing legends like Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid. His 222-run stand with Rahane was central to India’s dominance. This knock was a symbol of Kohli’s consistency during the 2016-17 home season.

5. 213 vs Sri Lanka – November 2017, Nagpur

Outcome: India won by an innings and 239 runs

Kohli tied Brian Lara’s record for most double centuries by a Test captain (5) with this impressive innings. His 183-run partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara showcased his skill to anchor innings and take charge against any bowling attack.

Under challenging circumstances with perilous air quality, Kohli demonstrated mental resilience and focus. This was his sixth Test double century, surpassing Brian Lara’s record of most double centuries as a skipper. He formed crucial partnerships with Rohit Sharma and Murali Vijay, solidifying his place among the greatest Test batsmen of the game.

Kohli’s career-best Test score came against South Africa, with an unbeaten 254. This innings marked his seventh Test double century, the most by any Indian player. He also broke MS Dhoni’s record for the highest score by an Indian Test captain and surpassed Don Bradman in terms of 150+ scores as captain.
