The first day of the second Test, which was played between India and New Zealand in Pune, belonged to off-spinner Washington Sundar. Washington was added to the Indian team right after the end of the Bengaluru Test and he got a chance to play in the playing eleven in Pune. 1 This is the first time in a men’s Test innings that two right-handed off-spinners have taken all 10 wickets for India. Ravichandran Ashwin took the first three wickets of New Zealand while Washington took the last seven wickets.
4 After Jim Laker’s 10-wicket haul in 1956, this is the fourth time in men’s Test history that all 10 wickets in an innings have been taken by a right-handed off-spinner. Before the Pune Test, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis had taken all 10 wickets in the India-Sri Lanka Colombo Test in 2008.

61 After failing to take a wicket in the first 13 overs, Washington Sundar took a total of 61 balls to take seven wickets. Before Washington, only one Indian bowler has taken seven wickets in such a short gap of balls in a men’s Test innings after 2000. Anil Kumble took seven wickets in 60 balls after failing in the first seven overs against Australia in Chennai.
Washington Sundar’s bowling figures of 7 for 59 are the third-joint-best figures for India against New Zealand in men’s Tests. S Venkataraghavan took eight wickets in 1965 and Erapalli Prasanna in 1976. Ashwin also took seven wickets for 59 runs in the Indore Test against New Zealand in 2016.

5 Washington Sundar bowled a total of five batsmen and now he is jointly at the first position in terms of bowling out the most batsmen in a men’s Test innings from India. Before him, Jasubha Patel and Bapu Nadkarni had done this in two consecutive Tests against Australia in 1959-60., while Ravindra Jadeja also bowled five wickets against Australia in the Delhi Test in 2023.

6 Including Washington Sundar, there are a total of six bowlers who have taken seven or more wickets on the first day of a men’s Test. Ghulam Ahmed in 1956, Maninder Singh in 1987, Kumble in 2004, and Irfan Pathan in 2005 have achieved the feat of taking seven wickets on the first day itself. Whereas Subhash Gupte took nine wickets against West Indies in Kanpur in 1958.

0 Between 1977 and 2023, there was not a single occasion when Indian spinners took all 10 wickets on the first day of a Test match. Whereas in 2024, Indian spinners have done this twice. Before Pune, earlier this year in Dharamsala against England, Indian spinners had also taken all 10 wickets on the first day.
