Watch: Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi’s brief exchange reignites old rivalry; highly awkward handshake sparks meme craze

Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi reignited their old rivalry in the season opener of the Legends League Cricket in Doha, Qatar.

There is a lot of history between Shahid Afridi and Gautam Gambhir. The two have not gotten along since their infamous heated argument during an ODI between India and Pakistan back in 2007. Gambhir and Afridi have exchanged jabs at one another over the years, sometimes inadvertently and other times while seated next to one another in studios. But on Friday, during the first game of the second season of the Legends League Cricket, the two former cricketers met in person for the first time in almost ten years.

When they walked out for the toss, Gambhir, captain of the India Maharajas, and Afridi, captain of the Asia Lions, were on the same screen. The two legends exchanged an awkward handshake after Asia Lions won the toss and decided to bat. While Gambhir, as he did throughout his entire cricketing career, controlled his emotions, Afridi gave himself into the handshake with a smile on his face. And as a result of their conversation, Twitter went into meme overdrive. Here are a few examples.

The Gambhir-Afridi episode needed to be expanded upon. When Afridi grabbed the ball and bowled to a well-positioned Gambhir during the second innings, both became trending topics on Twitter. Gambhir faced 10 balls from Afridi, off which he scored 10 runs, including one four. Gambhir and Afridi continued to converse as the former Pakistani captain checked on his former rival two overs later. Afridi questioned the batter when Gambhir took a single off Abdul Razzaq’s bowling and reached the non-end striker’s after a massive LBW appeal was denied. Gambhir responded with his usual head shake.

Watch the video below:

Gambhir led the India Maharajas innings with 54 off 39 balls, including seven fours, but Misbah-Ul-73-ball Haq’s innings earned him Player-of-the-Match honours, overshadowing Gambhir’s performance. As the Lions defeated the Maharajas by 9 runs, Gambhir was given the game-changer of the match award. Gambhir’s team needed to score 156/8 in the final over to win after chasing 166, which set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
