Watch: Russell gets run out in the most bizarre fashion

We have heard famous lines about runs outs in cricket like ‘That’s the last thing the batting team wanted’ or ‘The batter was looking in such a good touch that he could only get run out’. A similar thing happened in a match in the Bangladesh Premier League 2022. West-Indian hard-hitting all-rounder, Andre Russell was at the receiving end of one of the most bizarre run-out ever seen in cricket.

Russell who was playing for Minister Group Dhaka in the second match of BPL 2022 looked in good touch in his very short stay at the crease against the Khulna Tigers. Minister Group Dhaka was batting first when Russell entered the crease at 14.3 overs.

How did Russell get out?

He hit his first ball for a single and then a six at 14.5 over long-on. The six over long-on meant that he was looking in great touch as he even picked up the slower ball by Thisara Perera and cleared his front leg to smash the ball for a maximum.

Russell looked to change strike as he played a check shot towards the third man to run a quick single. His skipper Mahmudullah was running towards the dangerous striker’s end. The fielder placed at third hit a direct hit towards the striker’s end where Mahmudullah was well inside the crease. In the most unusual turn of events the ball after hitting the stumps at the striker’s end took a turn and hit the stumps at the bowler’s end where Russell was short. Russell who was running towards the safe was not even jogging when the ball hit his side of the stumps.

Minister Group Dhaka

The Minister Group Dhaka team at the end lost the game even after reaching the score of 183 in 20 overs thanks to a 27-ball 42-run knock by opener Mohammad Shahzad 20-ball 39-run knock by skipper Mahmudullah. In response, the Khulna Tigers got their innings off to a flier as opener Andre Fletcher scored a 23-ball 45-run knock and shared a great partnership with Rony Talukdar for the second wicket. Talukdar scored 61 runs in 42 balls. The finishing touch was provided by Perera as he scored 36 runs in 18 balls to win the match for Khulna Tigers with one over to spare.

It could be argued that if Russell had not gotten out at that stage in the first innings the total from Minister Group Dhaka could have reached 200.
