Watch: Samson makes a cheeky ‘catch’ gesture to Sangakkara in the middle of a dressing room speech, and the players go berserk.

In the 2023 Indian Premier League, the Rajasthan Royals defeated the Delhi Capitals by 57 runs thanks to an outstanding performance on Saturday. The Royals had a strong showing at the plate, scoring 199/4 before holding the Capitals to 142/9, handing David Warner’s team their third straight defeat. On a day when the captain, Sanju Samson (0), had a rare batting failure, Yashasvi Jaiswal (61) and Jos Buttler (79) had strong performances.

Samson made up for his bat-related misstep, though, by taking a superb catch to send the dangerous Prithvi Shaw packing for a duck in the very first over of Delhi Capitals’ chase. In the same over, DC eventually lost another batter (Manish Pandey), as Trent Boult had a double-wicket maiden.

After the victory, Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara addressed the team in the locker room and praised captain Samson for his leadership throughout the contest.

“Skipper, you really led the team well today. The way you managed the bowlers and the choices you made were excellent to watch. You did it without hesitation. That, in my opinion, was exceptional. Really well done, Sangakkara praised the presentation.

Then, as Samson raised his left arm, he slyly reminded Sangakkara of the catch. The ex-Captain of Sri Lanka quickly added, “Sorry, forgot the catch. Amazing catch. Brilliant,” everyone exclaimed in unison.

Watch:

Shaw’s angular cross-batted shot hit a thick outside edge, prompting Samson to make a brilliant dive to his left. Shaw’s dismal performance continued in the 2023 season until the wicketkeeper-batter eventually took a one-handed catch.

With two victories in their first three games of the season, the Rajasthan Royals jumped to the top of the standings. The team had a strong start to the season after dominating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 72 runs in the opener before suffering a narrow loss to Punjab Kings by five runs earlier this week.
