The Melbourne Renegades secured a four-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars in the latest derby clash at Junction Oval. Powered by Deandra Dottin’s outstanding all-round performance, the Renegades easily chased down a target of 142, getting over the line with seven balls to spare.
Stars Struggle After Early Top-Order Setback
Batting first after being sent in, early blows accounted for Meg Lanning and Amy Jones cheaply as Annabel Sutherland’s effort was required to set the scoreboard ticking through the middle overs, while much-needed aggression was injected by Marizanne Kapp.
However, Deandra Dottin’s telling triple strike 3-20 derailed the Stars’ attempt at a solid platform. A late burst from Kim Garth-who hit a lively 29 off 19 balls-lifted the total to 141/7-a score that still fell a tad short on a playable surface.
Webb and Molineux Build the Chase for Renegades
The Renegades were determined despite the early loss of Davina Perrin in the second over. A vital 58-run partnership between Courtney Webb, who made 37, and Sophie Molineux, who made 32, steadied the chase and placed the Renegades firmly in control.
The Stars bowlers attempted a late resurgence, taking wickets at regular intervals, reducing the Renegades to 121/6 by the 17th over. But the pressure didn’t last long.
Flintoff and Faltum Seal the Win
The game was still perfectly balanced until Tess Flintoff and Nichole Faltum calmly led the Renegades to victory, ensuring they could have no further hiccups in the chase. Their partnership iced the matchup in the 19th over.
Deandra Dottin Leads the Derby with Match-Winning Impact
This game also confirmed Deandra Dottin’s place as a bona fide match-winner. A sharp 3-20 with the ball and a brisk 6-ball 13 helped the Renegades find the momentum they needed with both bat and ball.
Her performance was central to:
Breaking Stars’ middle-order momentum
Providing the required spark for batting to keep the chase going.
Leading her team back to winning ways in the competition.
