Rovman Powell Axed, Kraigg Brathwaite Quits Captaincy: The West Indies cricket team is facing a major setback. T20I captain Rovman Powell has been removed from his position, and Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite has stepped down after four years in charge.

West Indies Cricket Faces Major Leadership Changes
ODI captain Shai Hope will now lead the West Indies in T20Is, replacing Rovman Powell. Powell took charge in May 2023 and led the team to some impressive victories, including wins over India, England, and South Africa.
Under his leadership, the team reached the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and climbed to fifth place in the ICC T20I rankings.CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe praised Rovman Powell’s leadership, stating that his time as captain has laid a strong foundation for the team. He also expressed gratitude for Powell’s efforts during his tenure.
“I have expressed to him [Powell] that he ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights,” Bascombe said. “His leadership has left a strong foundation, and we are grateful for his efforts.”
Rovman Powell’s Impact as Captain
Kraigg Brathwaite chose to step down as Test captain ahead of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. He informed the CWI of his decision after the Pakistan tour, aiming for a smooth transition in the format.
Brathwaite had a successful stint as captain, leading West Indies to their first Test victory in Australia in 27 years, defeating the opposition by 8 runs in Brisbane in 2024. He also recently guided the team to a series draw in Pakistan.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) released an official statement regarding Kraigg Brathwaite’s resignation as captain and confirmed that a new skipper would be named soon.
The statement read:
“Kraigg Brathwaite has officially stepped down as Test captain, having first indicated his intention to do so to CWI leadership earlier this year ahead of the completion of the West Indies’ successful tour of Pakistan,” the board said in a statement. “Understanding the importance of continuity, Brathwaite wanted to ensure the team had a period of transition before his departure.
“As a result, he has submitted his resignation ahead of the home series against Australia, giving the new leadership time to establish itself. This series will be particularly special, allowing Brathwaite, who is two matches shy of 100 Test matches, to double down on his batting without added responsibility.”
