Jason Holder, a versatile player for the West Indies, expressed concern about how a condensed test schedule would affect players’ chances of accomplishing goals.

Holder, who has played for the West Indies in 60 matches over the course of the team’s longest format, insisted that only the “big three” nations—England, Australia, and India—have a busy schedule.

Holder stated on Wednesday that, aside from the “big three,” “nearly every team is barely playing any test cricket” given the current state of world cricket.

Over the past three years, we have played six to eight test matches on average. We have six this year and about six next. To receive even remotely close to 100 tests, he said, “you have to be in the 11 for every single game.

Holder brought up the cases of England’s Joe Root, who has 129 caps since making his test debut in December 2012, and West Indies’ test captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who has played 83 times since making his test debut in May 2011.

It only serves to highlight how much more cricket England plays than we do, according to Holder. “We have no control over it. Simply dealing with what is in front of us and making the most of it are our only options.

Anrich Nortje, a fast bowler for South Africa with 18 test appearances, said that players work to maximise the opportunities they are given.

“I doubt I’ll ever complete 50 tests. I’ll need another seven years to complete that. Some nations will play 20 games over the coming months. It’s difficult,” said Nortje.

“You can’t compare the greats’ achievements because they participated in a lot of test cricket in the past. The primary format is that. Over the course of two years, we play four, eight, or ten games.

The first test between South Africa and the West Indies is being played this week in Centurion. Before the third day of play begins later on Thursday, the hosts are ahead by 179 runs.
