What does the hit-wicket rule say if the batter hits a boundary?

The match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore swung similarly to a pendulum after the 17th over in the second innings. LSG, the chasing team was on course to win the match easily at the Chinnaswamy Stadium as they required only 24 runs in the last three overs. The match in the 19th over saw LSG’s young batting star, Ayush Badoni hit a six and be dismissed hit-wicket. Here is what the hit-wicket rule says if the batter hits a boundary.

Youngster Ayush Badoni (30 off 24), who was well on track to win it for his team in his very own cool and serene demeanour, became the victim of a hit-wicket after playing a brilliant scoop shot for a Six with seven runs still needed for victory.

It took place on Wayne Parnell’s fourth delivery of the 19th Over. Badoni knelt down to hit a flawless ramp shot for a six towards the Fine Leg fence after the Proteas pacer bowled a low Full Toss down the leg side.

He simply misjudged his balance and, as he attempted to complete the shot, swung his bat through, tragically making contact with the stumps and dislodging the bails.

Hit-wicket rules in cricket

According to MCC “Out Hit Wicket” Law 35.1, the striker is out if his or her wicket is smashed by either the striker’s bat or person as defined in Laws 29.2.1.2 to 29.2.1 after the bowler has reached the delivery stride and while the ball is in play.

What does the hit-wicket rule say if a batter hits a boundary?

The main point is why the runs scored by the particular hitter would not be tallied to the team scoreboard, even if there are other subheadings under the aforementioned law explaining the many ways a batsman might be Out Hit Wicket.

The ‘Law 35.3-Runs Scored’ states that no run should be awarded to the batter or their team in the case of a hit-wicket. Only a wide ball run should be awarded or if the ball comes into contact with the keeper’s helmet, gloves or a similar object then 5 run penalty would still be awarded to the batting team.

As a result, Badoni and LSG’s total did not increase by six runs because the former was already dismissed hit-wicket post the time he played the ball.
