The weight and size of a football in a game needs to be accurate so that the match is played without any disturbance. In this article, you will learn about the weight, size and air pressure of a football.
Football also known as soccer is arguably the most popular sport in the world. One of the most important aspects of the sport is the ball. The ball plays a crucial role in determining the accuracy in which the game is played. In this article, we will discuss about the details of the ball used in a match.
The football used in a game comes under the Law 2 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The official ball used in a game has to be in a spherical shape. The ball is made of leather or sometimes of synthetic material. The ball consists of 32 hexagonal or pentagon shaped panels. These panels are made of waterproofed leather so that the ball is not affected due to the weather.
Weight, circumference and air pressure
The weight of a ball used in an official game is between 410 grams and 450 grams at the start of the match. The circumference of a ball being used in a game needs to be between 68 cm and 70 cm. The pressure needs to be between 8.5 and 15.6 Per Square Inch (psi).
Replacing a defective ball
If a ball becomes defective during the play then play is stopped and is restarted with a dropped ball. If a ball becomes defective at the stoppage of play like a goal kick, kick-off, penalty kick, free kick, corner, or throw-in then the action retook.
If the ball becomes defective during a penalty or after the kick is taken before it touches any player, goal post, or crossbar then the penalty kick is retaken.
A defective ball can be replaced by an additional ball placed around the football field. These additional footballs need to be regulated and passed under the Law 2 of IFAB.
