The Boston Celtics are entering a tough season as they prepare to play without their star forward Jayson Tatum. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon during last year’s playoffs, and recovery from this injury usually keeps a player out for a full year. While Tatum has been positive about his rehab, it is unlikely that fans will see him back on the court during the 2025-26 season.

Without their main scorer and leader, the Celtics will need to adjust. Here are five realistic expectations for the team in Jayson Tatum’s absence.

1) Jaylen Brown will take the lead on offence

Jaylen Brown

Jaylen Brown has always been the second option behind Tatum, but this season he will have to step into the role of the primary scorer. The Celtics will look to him as their go-to player. With more touches and bigger responsibility, Brown could take a big step forward in his offensive game.

2) Derrick White could become the most reliable player

Derrick White

Derrick White has improved every season, and now he may be the Celtics’ most consistent two-way player. After averaging a career-high 16.4 points last year, White is expected to add even more scoring while also keeping his strong defense. He could be the backbone of the team this season.

3) Anfernee Simons will play as a shooter

The Celtics added Anfernee Simons, who is known for his scoring and shooting ability. He is not a replacement for Tatum, but he can help stretch the floor. If Simons accepts a spot-up shooting role, he could become a valuable weapon, giving Brown and White more space to attack.

4) Frontcourt depth will be an issue

The Celtics’ inside game looks weaker this year. With Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis gone, the team has lost size and experience in the paint. Players like Luka Garza, Chris Boucher, and Xavier Tillman will try to fill the gap, but the Celtics’ frontcourt may struggle against stronger Eastern Conference big men.

5) Celtics may fall short of a title run

Last season’s championship roster is no longer the same. Without Tatum and with a thinner frontcourt, Boston might not be strong enough to compete for the title this year. While they still have a talented roster, the road to the Finals looks harder as other East contenders have gotten stronger.
