However, Poland, the 1972 champions, fought back. Wojciech Kowalczyk’s goal in stoppage time leveled the scores before the break. Abelardo equalized again in the 65th minute, only for Kiko to restore Spain’s lead just six minutes later.

The rollercoaster continued as Ryszard Staniek pulled one back for Poland in the 76th minute, ensuring a tense finish. But it was Kiko who stole the show once more, scoring the decisive goal in the first minute of injury time to secure Spain’s historic and, to date, only Olympic gold medal in men’s football.
