India’s strange run with ODI tosses continues to puzzle everyone. In the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, Temba Bavuma once again won the toss and sent India in to bat. With this, India have now lost 20 ODI tosses in a row, a streak that has stretched almost two full years regardless of who the captain is.
A New Captain, Same Toss Luck
India last won a toss during the 2023 World Cup semifinal. Since that day, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and now Shubman Gill have all failed to call correctly. In Shubman’s case, the record is even more surprising as he has lost 10 out of 11 tosses so far as captain.
Calling a coin toss is purely chance, but India’s streak has become extremely rare. Statistically, losing 20 coin tosses in a row has a probability of just 0.000763 percent. It is one of those odd moments in cricket that fans will talk about for years.

Mixed Results Despite Toss Issues
Even though the toss luck has been terrible, India’s overall performances have not always suffered. They lost the World Cup final and a series against Sri Lanka, but they also remained unbeaten during the Champions Trophy earlier this year. A second-string squad even pulled off a series win in South Africa.
