Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen has joined the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. He’s replacing Glenn Maxwell, who got injured with a fractured finger and can’t play for the rest of the tournament.
This IPL has been a tough season for Maxwell. In 7 matches, he scored 48 runs only, and all those scores were under 10. Just before the PBKS match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 26, he got injured.
The IPL confirmed the replacement with a statement: “Punjab Kings have picked Mitchell Owen as the replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a broken finger.”
Owen, 23, is a right-handed batter and seam bowler. PBKS signed him for INR 3 crores. In 34 T20 matches, Owen has scored 646 runs, with a strike rate of 184.57 and two centuries. He’s also a useful medium pacer, with 10 wickets at an average of 9.63.
Who is Mitchell Owen?
Born on September 16, 2001, Mitchell Owen is known for his aggressive batting approach. He can set boundaries and is a powerful striker. He is a promising player in T20 cricket because of his batting ability and practical bowling.
Owen’s efforts in domestic T20 leagues have earned him a reputation. He participated in the present Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 with Peshawar Zalmi prior to joining PBKS. Despite not having yet represented Australia, Owen has shown himself to be a valuable T20 player and a powerful hitter.
Owen made his T20 debut in the 2020-21 Big Bash League (BBL). But, it was during the 2024-25 season with Hobart Hurricanes that he really caught the spotlight. He scored 452 runs in 11 matches, with a strike rate of 203.60 and an average of 45.20.
In the 2024-25 BBL season, Owen scored the first century of the season against Perth Scorchers, hitting 101 runs off 64 balls. In the final of the same season, he scored 108 runs off just 42 balls, hitting 11 sixes and 6 boundaries. His strike rate during that innings was 257, showing his power-hitting ability.
