USA cricketer, Kyle Phillip received a suspension from ICC for bowling in international cricket after his action was deemed illegal. The suspension of the 26-year-old fast bowler came as another blow for the United States team. They are already at the bottom of their group in ICC World Cup Qualifiers having lost all three games they have played. In this article, we will take a look at the reason behind Kyle Phillip’s suspension from bowling in international cricket.

Why was Kyle Phillip suspended?

Phillip’s action came to the notice of the ICC match officials after the game between the USA and the West Indies on June 18. It was the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers where Phillip registered impressive figures of 3 for 56. The right-arm fast bowler took the wicket of West Indian opener, Kyle Mayers. Later in the game, he took the key wicket of Jason Holder who was batting at 56 and two balls later he put an end to West Indies batting with the wicket of Alzarri Joseph.

After this match, ICC match officials started reviewing the footage of his bowling action. He then featured in the clash against Nepal as well where he went wicketless and conceded 49 runs in his 7 overs. He did not feature in yesterday’s clash against the Netherlands where he was replaced by USA’s leading fast bowler, Ali Khan. Ali Khan was also serving a two-match suspension due to a breach of the code of conduct.

The ICC said. “The Event Panel reviewed match footage of Phillip’s bowling action and concluded that he employs an illegal bowling action and as such, in accordance with Article 6.7 of the regulations, he is suspended from bowling in international cricket.”

Article 6.7 states that if the ‘Event Panel Report concludes that the Player uses an Illegal Bowling Action, the Player shall be immediately suspended from bowling in International Cricket’

What does it mean for USA and Kyle Phillip?

The USA team who are already at the bottom of their group in World Cup Qualifiers will have their dream broken of getting into the Cricket World Cup because even with a win against Zimbabwe they will not qualify for the Super Six.

Kyle Phillip will have to submit a reassessment of his action to end his suspension from bowling in international cricket.
