The BCCI on Monday announced the Team India squad for the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October. Most of the major stars found a place on the Indian team. Expectedly, Rohit Sharma is the captain of the side. The only prominent name that went missing from the list was an injured Ravindra Jadeja.

However, there were cries on Twitter about the omission of two players. Most fans expressed disappointment about it. They asked why Sanju Samson and Mohammed Shami missed the ticket, despite some decent performances in the past. However, there are several reasons the duo went unfeatured in the team.

Sanju Samson, the Unlucky Man

In the limited opportunities he got, the swashbuckling cricketer played some crucial cameos for the team. In addition, he expanded his range of strokes. For Sanju, talent was never a question, but the doubts were about his consistency.

However, of late, the Kerala cricketer displayed composure and grit and put more value on his wicket. Meanwhile, a more experienced Shreyas Iyer got the nod over Sanju on the standby list. Incidentally, Sanju is in the middle-order slot and also went against his favour. The selectors looked for an extra batter who can bowl and hence Deepak Hooda got the nod ahead of Samson in the final 15.

Why was Shami omitted?

It was team management’s plan to go with four seamers in the team. An experienced Shami did not feature in any of India’s matches after the T20 World Cup last year. In Harshal Patel, India found a wicket-taking third seamer. In the meantime, new talents like Arshdeep Singh returned and Bhuvneshwar Kumar established his firm presence in the team.

As a result, the Bengal cricketer found no place in the pecking order. Unfortunately, not on the standby list too, as Deepak Chahar got the nod for his swing and lower-order batting abilities.

However, not everything is over for the duo. Age is certainly on their side, and they have a chance to claim their authority in the upcoming 50 Over World Cup, hosted by India, next year.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh.
Standby players: Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi and Deepak Chahar.
