The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially revealed the new date for the much-awaited Rohit Sharma Stand inauguration at the Wankhede Stadium. Originally set for May 13, the ceremony will now take place on Friday, May 16, at 4 PM IST.
Why Was the Event Postponed?
The delay happened because the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was put on hold by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This decision came after rising tensions near the India-Pakistan border created safety concerns across the country.
The BCCI paused the league for a week to keep players, fans, and staff safe. Now that a ceasefire agreement is in place, peace is slowly returning. The IPL will restart on May 17 with the RCB vs. KKR match.
Wankhede’s Tribute to Mumbai’s Cricket Star

During the 86th Annual General Meeting on April 15, the MCA decided to honour one of Mumbai’s greatest cricket heroes Rohit Sharma by naming a stadium stand after him. This is a big moment for Rohit and his fans, especially at Wankhede, where many of his iconic moments happened.
It’s a rare gesture in Indian cricket, showing the deep respect MCA has for Rohit’s journey from a local talent to a national cricketing icon.
Rohit Sharma’s Sudden Test Retirement
In a twist that surprised everyone, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, just days before the MCA’s big news. This move came after reports suggested he might lose the Test captaincy.
At 38, Rohit ends his red-ball career with:
- 4,301 Test runs in 67 matches
- 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries
- A solid average of 40.57
Rohit was known for his calm leadership, strong batting, and big match performances. He became a key Test opener and delivered important wins overseas and at home.
