The WI vs SCO 2nd ODI of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025 witnessed Scotland’s victory by an 11-run margin against the mighty West Indies, even though Hayley Matthews delivered an incredible all-round performance.
Matthews’ Incredible Feat Goes in Vain
Hayley Matthews played a performance for the ages, becoming just the fourth player in women’s ODI history to claim four wickets and a century in the same game. Her four wickets destroyed the top order of Scotland, and her hard-grinding 100 with the bat kept the West Indies in contention during the chase.
Struggling through severe cramps in 40°C heat and 60% humidity, Matthews left the field twice and even came back on a stretcher to continue batting when West Indies were nine wickets down. Her contributions, however, proved insufficient to take her team home, with West Indies remaining short of the 244-run mark.
Scotland’s Team Effort Secures Famous Win
Organizing to bat first on a green pitch at the LCCA Ground in Lahore, Scotland displayed maturity against the experienced West Indies bowling. An opening partnership of 48 runs between Abbi Aitken-Drummond and Darcy Carter gave Scotland a platform to build on. After Matthews’ triple strike left them 69 for 3, Sarah Bryce (55 off 56) and Megan McColl put together 82 runs for the fifth wicket.
Scotland then amassed 244 all out in 45 overs, before their spinners took center stage. Katherine Fraser, Darcy Carter, and Abtaha Maqsood took six wickets between them to scuttle the West Indies’ run.
Turning Point in WI vs SCO 2nd ODI
West Indies’ innings began poorly, with Qiana Joseph being dismissed early. Matthews and Zaida James stabilized the innings with a 113-run stand, but after James was out for 42, there was a collapse.
Shemaine Campbell, Stafanie Taylor, and Chinelle Henry were dismissed one after the other. West Indies seemed to be in control at 120 for 2, but at 174 for 7, they were in serious trouble.
Even though Matthews came back to contribute a brave hundred, there was not enough support to prevent the West Indies from being bowled out for 233, which gave Scotland an 11-run victory and their first points of the tournament.
WI vs SCO 2nd ODI – Women’s World Cup Qualifier
– Scotland: 244 all out (Sarah Bryce 55, Matthews 4 wickets)
– West Indies: 233 all out (Matthews 100, Fraser 2 wickets)
– Result: Scotland by 11 runs
The WI vs SCO 2nd ODI was an exciting display of grit, drama, and surprises. While it was Hayley Matthews’ all-round brilliance that made the game exciting, it was the team spirit of Scotland, alongside their clever spinners, that made history.
