Will Compound Archery be included in the LA 2028 Olympics?
The potential inclusion of compound archery in the LA28 Olympic Games. Learn about the sport’s mechanics, gender progress, and historical significance.
Compound archery has the potential to be introduced to the LA28 Olympic Games after World Archery submitted a request to include the sport on the sporting calendar.
The International Olympic Committee has the last say, but the request wouldn’t have been submitted if there wasn’t a good chance it would be granted.
At its foundation, compound archery is about attaining excellence. the total control of one’s body and intellect to perform admirably under pressure.
What is compound archery?
Compound archery is a type of archery that uses a compound bow. A compound bow is a bow that uses a levering system, usually of cables and pulleys, to bend the limbs. This system allows the archer to draw the bow with less effort and also stores more energy in the bow, which results in faster arrow speeds. Compound bows are widely used in target practice and hunting.
Compound archery’s historical gender bias is due to factors that have nothing to do with the sport itself. However, there has been a notable increase in both the calibre and the number of elite female performers during the past ten years. The change has been led by arguably the greatest of all time in the sport, Sara Lopez. During the final matchplay in Medellin last year, she equalled Reo Wilde’s compound men’s world record by scoring a flawless 150 points with 12 X-ring arrows.
By the way, the application for inclusion in Los Angeles was for a mixed event where men and women would compete side by side.
History of sport
The compound bow, a more mechanically effective type of archery equipment, was invented in the USA in the 1960s. Even now, it is widely used in the United States. International acclaim came a little later, with admission in the 1995 World Archery Championships and a gradual expansion to other nations over the following three decades.
More than 70% of the almost 100 nations slated to compete in the Hyundai World Archery Championships this summer in Berlin will enter compound archers.
It’s easy to forget that sports must innovate and make sure that events add value to the programme because the structure of the recurve archery competitions at the Olympic Games has largely remained the same for so long (since the head-to-head competition was introduced at Barcelona in 1992).
