The first round of Wimbledon is underway and Novak Djokovic defeated Argentine Pedro Cachin. Djokovic currently has seven Wimbledon titles under his belt while Roger Federer with eight titles holds the record for the highest number of Wimbledon titles.
Will Djokovic end with more Wimbledon titles than Federer?
Many ex-tennis greats and even current players have picked Djokovic has been picked as the favourite to win the Wimbledon 2023. Former World No. 1, Mats Wilander believes that the Serbian legend could end his career with nine or 10 titles. Wilander said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Djokovic ends up with nine or 10. So, Roger better hold this record of eight close to his heart for now.”
Spain’s new sensation, Carlos Alcaraz had earlier said that Nick Kyrgios has more chance to beat Djokovic at Wimbledon. The Australian tennis player was then ruled out of Wimbledon due to a wrist injury. Alcaraz believed that he had a great chance of success after winning the Queen’s Championships late in June. The Spaniard admitted that Djokovic will still remain to win at Wimbledon. He said, “Well, I am coming now (to play) Wimbledon with a lot of confidence, that’s obvious, but I saw a statistic that Novak has won more matches at Wimbledon than any top-20 player. What can I say about that? Novak is the main favourite to win Wimbledon, that’s obvious, but I will try to play at this level to have chances to beat him or make the final at Wimbledon.”
It is likely that Novak Djokovic will go past Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. Djokovic who is 36 years old could play up to four more Wimbledon which will give him a real shot at going past Federer’s record. There are hardly any players who can pose a threat to the 36-year-old currently and will fancy his chances of winning an eighth Wimbledon title this year.
Novak Djokovic
At the Roland Garros, Djokovic went past Rafael Nadal’s record of winning the most Grand Slam titles. Djokovic who currently has 23 Grand Slams will be eyeing his 24th at Wimbledon. Djokovic already has the most titles at the Australian Open. He has 10 titles while the next best is Roy Emerson and Roger Federer with 6 titles each.
Rivalry with Nadal
His rivalry against Djokovic is closely contested. Their head-to-head record is currently led by Djokovic. The two legendary players have squared off with each other 59 times with Djokovic winning 30 times while Nadal has won 29 games. Djokovic is the only player to have defeated Nadal in straight sets in any major final. He achieved the feat at Australian Open in 2019.
