The countdown to the Women’s T20 World Cup officially begins on June 12, with the tournament final scheduled for July 5 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. This edition is expected to be one of the most competitive tournaments women’s cricket has seen, bringing together some of the strongest teams in the game for almost a month of high-pressure cricket. Interestingly, the very first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was also hosted in England back in 2009. At that time, only eight teams were part of the competition. Since then, the women’s game has grown massively across the world, and this year’s tournament reflects that progress, with 12 teams set to compete for the title. Defending Champion New Zealand can clinch the title again; they are one of the best sides in the Women’s T20WC.

Still, defending a World title is never easy

Teams like Australia, England, and India arrive with stronger squad depth on paper, and New Zealand will need consistency across the tournament if they want to lift the trophy again. Recent results also show the challenge ahead. England recently defeated New Zealand comfortably in the opening T20I of their series before the World Cup, exposing a few concerns in the batting lineup.

The New Zealand women’s cricket team heads into the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with genuine belief and a squad capable of challenging the best teams in the tournament. After winning the previous edition, the White Ferns are no longer underdogs,  they are now a side every opponent will take seriously.
