Charleston Open is the first big clay court event in the women’s tennis calendar. This tournament is held every year at Daniel Island in South Carolina. It started in 1973 and has become one of the most important clay tournaments in the United States.

Tracy Austin won in 1980 and 1981, but lost the 1983 final to Martina Navratilova.
Gabriela Sabatini was the first South American woman to win this title, winning back-to-back in 1991 and 1992.
Conchita Martínez also won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995.
Martina Hingis won in 1997 and 1999.
Justine Henin beat Serena Williams in 2003 for her first title, and won again in 2005 by defeating Elena Dementieva.
Serena Williams is the only woman to win this title more than twice after the year 2000.

In 1989, she won against Natasha Zvereva.
In 1993, she defeated Arantxa Sánchez Vicario to win her fifth title.
Chris Evert has won the most Charleston Open titles in history.
She won her first title in 1974 by beating Kerry Melville.
Then from 1975 to 1978, she won four titles in a row without losing a set in the finals.
In 1984, she beat Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, and in 1985, she defeated Gabriela Sabatini.
In 1986, she reached the final again but lost to Steffi Graf.
