The Team Combined event made its official senior debut at the 2025 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships in Saalbach, after being tested in the junior editions of 2023 and 2024.The new format featured one downhill followed by a slalom.
Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson of US became the first-ever women’s world champions in the new Alpine Team Combined event.
The two Americans posted a combined time of 2:40.89, securing Team USA 1 a gold on Tuesday (11 February) in Saalbach, Austria.
“This was an amazing day for me up there, nerve-racking. Breezy did her job spectacularly this morning. It’s really unbelievable, I am so happy,” said the now eight-time world champion Shiffrin in the finish area with a beaming smile.
Shiffrin, making her debut in Saalbach, was the fourth-fastest slalom racer (0.39 seconds slower than Holdener) but it was enough for her 15th medal at Worlds. The US superstar has equalled Christel Cranz’s record for most medals won at World Championships with 15 podium finishes.
Johnson then added: “She’s such a legend. It’s super cool to be, like, hitting my stride. And she’s, you know, obviously been on hers for a decade or more. She said it was nerve-racking, but it’s super nerve-racking being Mikeala’s teammate too!”

Switzerland took silver with Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener, clocking the fastest slalom. They finished 0.39 seconds behind the winners at the 2025 World Alpine Ski Championships.
Hosts Austria clinched the bronze with Stephanie Venier – fresh from her Super-G title – and Katharina Truppe posting 0.53 seconds off the pace.
Johnson posted the fourth-fastest time in the downhill, 0.51 seconds behind the top mark set by teammate Lauren Macuga, and secured her second title at these World Championships after winning gold in the downhill.
After leading the downhill rankings thanks to Macuga’s impressive run, Team USA 2 finished fourth as Paula Moltzan managed only the 15th-fastest time.
Lindsey Vonn, who finished 21st in the opening leg of the competition, ended her World Championships campaign in Saalbach in 16th place alongside teammate AJ Hurt.
Team Germany 1 was second after the first leg, with Emma Aicher clocking the second-fastest time, but their medal hopes vanished when Lena Duerr made a mistake in the slalom and failed to finish.
Mirjam Puchner led Team Austria 1 to third place after the downhill. However, 2021 world slalom champion Katharina Liensberger could only manage the 13th-fastest time. They finished fifth overall.
The focus at the 2025 Alpine Ski World Championships now shifts to the men’s Team Combined event on Wednesday, 12 February.
