3 Min Read

The Indian squad for the World Athletics Championships have been announced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). A contingent including 13 men and six women, will be travelling to Tokyo for the event that is scheduled to be held from 13 to 21 September.

Current world champion Neeraj Chopra will spearhead India’s 19-member squad at the World Athletics Championships 2025.

Chopra, who successfully defended his world title in Budapest in 2023, remains India’s biggest medal hope in the men’s javelin throw. The 26-year-old has qualified through a wild card as the defending champion, though he had already surpassed the 85.50m entry standard earlier in the season. He will be joined in the javelin event by Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh, both of whom secured their berths via the world rankings.

Odisha’s Animesh Kujur, who created history by becoming the first Indian male sprinter to qualify for the World Athletics Championships, earned his place in the men’s 200m. His participation marks a watershed moment for Indian sprinting on the global stage.

India also had athletes who qualified through entry standards, including Avinash Sable (3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), Gulveer Singh (5000m) and Praveen Chitravel (triple jump). However, Sable has been ruled out of the Championships due to an injury that cut short his season.

The remaining athletes qualified through their world rankings.Women’s javelin thrower Annu Rani also earned the qualification through world rankings.

Nandini Agasara booked her place in the heptathlon as the Asian (Area) champion. However, she will miss the World Championships after sustaining an elbow injury.
