World Athletics Championships Tokyo: Meet Team Kenya Led By Faith Kipyegon

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025 is set to be held in September and Kenya has revealed the squad for the much-anticipated competition.

Apart from a host of elite runners, others were selected on the basis of the Kenyan Trials at the Ulinzi Sports Complex during which the top two finishers in each discipline earned an automatic ticket, provided they met the qualifying time.

A total of 58 athletes have been picked in the provisional squad. 

Olympic gold medallists Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet and Emmanuel Wanyonyi are among the headliners.

Other big names in the contingent are Tokyo 2020 marathon women’s champion Peres Jepchirchir, world champions Mary Moraa (800m), Julius Yego in javelin and Timothy Cheruiyot, the 2019 world champion over the 1500m.

Ferdinand Omanyala, the African 100m record holder also features in the field.

kenya Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya  said the fierce competition during the trials was a strong indication of the team’s medal potential in Tokyo.

“This year’s national trials and the competition witnessed at this event give us hope that we are in for a medal harvest, come September in Tokyo. A huge congratulations to all the athletes who have been selected in the team,” Mvurya added.

The World Championships is set for September 13-21, with Kenya looking to add to the 171 medals they have won in the history of the competition, thus far.
