The World Athletics Championships 2025 which will be held in Tokyo is around the corner and countries are gearing up to send their contingents.

The Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) has revealed a provisional team for the Championships to be held from 13 to 21 September at Japan’s National Stadium.

A total of 48 athletes including those on the reserves have made it to the list,  both male and female events of 7 disciplines including a 20 kilometer walking competition.

The majority of the team – which consists of 26 women and 22 male athletes – have already booked tickets for Tokyo after securing the qualification time in trial events.

Nine athletes, however, have made it into the team based on their points in the World Athletics rankings.

Headlining the Ethiopian squad are Selemon Barega and Gudaf Tsegay who won three of Ethiopia’s four medals when the venue hosted the 2020 Olympic Games five years ago. Amane Beriso, the reigning women’s marathon gold medallist, will also seek to defend her title in Japan.

Former world record holder in the mile and half-marathon Yomif Kejelcha will feature in men’s 10,000m team, alongside Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Berihu Aregawi and Barega.

Team Ethiopia’s women’s 1500m line up includes Diribe Welteji, the silver medallist in 2023, Birke Haylom, and Saron Berhe.

World steeplechase record holder Lamecha Girma, who is a triple silver medallist from the last three editions of the World Championships, also featured in the provisional team.
