U20 World Records: Recent Record-Breaking Achievements

During the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia, Olympic champions Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Mondo Duplantis made headlines by breaking world records within minutes of each other. Ingebrigtsen set a new standard in the 3000m, clocking a remarkable 7:17.55, shattering the previous record of 7:20.67 held by Kenya’s Daniel Komen since 1996.
Shortly after, Duplantis graced the pole vault runway and cleared 6.26m, improving upon his own world record initially set during his Olympic triumph in Paris on August 5.
Australian distance runner Jessica Hull also made her mark before the Olympics, etching her name in the record books with a stunning 2000m run at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco. Hull clinched victory with a time of 5:19.70, surpassing the previous record of 5:21.56 set by Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba in September 2021.

Emerging star Biniam Mehary gained attention in February when he broke the world U20 indoor 1500m record in Torun. His impressive time of 3:34.83 surpassed Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s prior mark of 3:36.02 from February 2019.
American sprinter JaMeesia Ford also made headlines by clocking 22.34 seconds over 200m in Boston, breaking the previous U20 record of 22.40 seconds set by Bianca Knight in 2008. Earlier in the season, Ford had recorded a time of 22.36 seconds, but it was not ratified as an official record.
Outdoor records continued to fall starting in April when Chinese athlete Yan Ziyi threw her javelin 64.28m in Hangzhou, breaking the previous U20 record of 63.86m held by Cuba’s Yulenmis Aguilar since 2015. By the end of the season, Yan improved her record to 64.41m, which is pending ratification.
At the European Championships in Rome, Italian teenager Mattia Furlani showcased his talent by achieving a world U20 long jump record of 8.38m, earning a silver medal and exceeding the previous record of 8.35m set by Russia’s Sergey Morgunov in 2012.
Dutch middle-distance runner Niels Laros also made waves by winning the 1000m at the Continental Tour Gold meeting in Hengelo with a time of 2:14.37, breaking the long-standing record of 2:15.00 held by Kenya’s Benjamin Kipkurui since 1999.
