Lord’s Test Day 1 started with both teams fighting equally
The first day of WTC Final 2025 was played between Australia and South Africa at the famous Lord’s ground in London. Both teams performed equally well on the opening day. Kagiso Rabada bowled strongly and dismissed Australia for just 212 runs. But the main highlight of the match was a moment that happened for the first time in 145 years of cricket.
Rabada’s strong start and Australia’s struggle
South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. The start was slow, but in the sixth over, Marnus Labuschagne played a shot on the leg side to open the score. After that, Rabada set the tone of the match. He got Usman Khawaja out for zero in the slips, and then dismissed Cameron Green in the same over.
Smith and Webster tried to resist, but Rabada turned the game
Marnus and Steve Smith tried to save the innings, but two more wickets fell before lunch. Smith made a 79-run partnership with Beau Webster for the fifth wicket, but Aiden Markram, who is a part-time bowler, got Smith out at 66 runs. Alex Carey also added 23 runs, but Rabada came back and took three more wickets to complete his five-wicket haul. Even with some team effort, Australia got all out for 212.
A record that never happened before in 145 years at Lord’s
This Test match saw a record that happened for the first time in the 561st Test at Lord’s, both teams’ number one batters got out for zero in the first innings. Rabada dismissed Khawaja and Mitchell Starc bowled out Markram. This rare moment made the match even more special.
South Africa’s innings also started badly
In reply, South Africa also didn’t get a good start. Starc got Ryan Rickelton out, and Pat Cummins broke Wiaan Mulder’s stumps. Temba Bavuma took 31 balls to score his first run, which the crowd enjoyed. After that, he added just two more runs and remained not out at stumps.
Josh Hazlewood also made an impact and bowled out Tristan Stubbs for only 2 runs. At the end of the day, South Africa’s score was 43/4 and they were still 169 runs behind.
