John Cena kicked off his WWE retirement tour in January, and fans are already buzzing about who he’ll face in his final match. Rumor has it that Gunther may be the one to step into the ring with him for that big farewell.
John Cena’s Farewell Tour Begins
Over the past few months, Cena has been on an incredible run, he won the Elimination Chamber and went on to defeat Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania, making history with his 17th World Championship win.
With Cena planning to retire in December this year, reports suggest Gunther could have the honor of being his last opponent. Although the two have never faced off in the ring before, Gunther has already shared his excitement about the possibility of taking on the WWE legend.
“It’s the last chance to get in the ring with him, so if that ever becomes a possibility, I would definitely take that,” Gunther told the Daily Mail.
“John Cena is obviously one of the wrestlers, you can put him onto Mount Rushmore.”
“If I get the chance I would definitely like to do that. Let’s see how it plays out. Maybe I can end up as his last chance to win a championship at some point in that year, and I can be the one that crushes all those dreams. That would be very enjoyable.”
The Rock vs. Cena: A Storybook Ending?
Former WWE Champion JBL recently shared his thoughts on who might be John Cena’s final opponent. Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Something to Wrestle’ podcast, JBL mentioned a few big names like Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
However, he ultimately felt that the perfect way to wrap up Cena’s legendary career would be a match against The Rock. According to JBL, it was The Rock who played a key role in helping Cena turn heel toward the end of his storied run, making a final showdown between the two a fitting conclusion.
“I think Brock would be awesome. I also think Roman would be awesome. I think both those would be incredible matches, but I think The Rock. That’s kinda it because The Rock kinda helped him turn heel. The Rock had done so much.”
