WWE Universal Champions: Listing and Overview of the Players

The National Wrestling Alliance area, run by Jim Crockett Jr.’s Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, first established and defended the title as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship (NWA). On January 1, 1975, when the title was first introduced, Harley Race was named the first winner. World Championship Wrestling (WCW), the moniker of its main television program, was given to Mid-Atlantic by Turner Broadcasting after it was acquired in November 1988.

The former WWF acquired several WCW assets in March 2001. The WCW United States Heavyweight Championship, which the WWF referred to as the WCW United States Championship, as a result, became a championship for the WWF. The United States Championship was inactive when the WCW United States and WWF Intercontinental Championships were combined at Survivor Series in November 2001. The championship was reinstated in July 2003 as the WWE United States Championship. The promotion did not establish any other active WWE championships. It has only competed on Raw since the 2019 WWE Superstar Shake-up.

In professional wrestling contests, when contestants perform planned ends rather than engage in direct conflict, the championship is up for grabs. While some champions utilized their ring names to hold onto their titles, others used their true names. In his second reign, Austin Theory is the current champion. On November 26, 2022, in Boston, Massachusetts, at Survivor Series WarGames, he prevailed against Bobby Lashley and former champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins in a triple-threat match.

There have been 101 different champions overall. With six reigns, Ric Flair holds the record for most reigns, while John Cena has five reigns under the WWE brand. With five, including two from WCW and three from WWE, Chris Benoit is also tied with John Cena. The longest tenure is currently held by Lex Luger, whose third reign lasted 523 days. Dean Ambrose’s reign is the longest under the WWE brand, spanning 351 days total (third longest in the title’s history). [3] “Stunning” The second reign of Steve Austin lasted for about five minutes. Only two men—Lex Luger and Rick Rude—have held the title consistently for a full 365 days.

The championship made its debut in WCW. Several of the greatest wrestlers in history have held the U.S. Title, including WWE Hall of Famers Sgt. Slaughter and Greg Valentine, in its early years. Years later, after many great contests between wrestlers like Eddie Guerrero, Booker T and John Cena, the U.S. Championship reclaimed the prominence it had previously enjoyed.

The following table showcases the wrestlers of the WWE American Championships and the years during which they were active:
