“You regret missing out on the World Cup”- Yuzvendra Chahal talks about his exclusion from the 2021 T20 World Cup

The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup turned out to be a nightmare for India. The sub-par performance of the team didn’t let them qualify for the playoffs. The agitated fans questioned many decisions pertaining to the squad selection. The omission of one name from the World Cup squad especially troubled many as they tried to crack the reasoning behind it. Yuzvendra Chahal, the magical leg-spinner with the best records among spinners in T20 for India was not included in the team.

Instead, the management moved ahead with the likes of Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy. Even before the team delivered a sour performance, fans were not happy with the omission of Chahal. Right before the the WC in UAE, Chahal outperformed himself in the second leg of the 2021 IPL, also in UAE. And so it only seemed logical to include the so-in-form Chahal in the squad. BCCI, however, maybe missed the logic as they moved ahead without him. Moreover, they didn’t get to justify their version as both Chakravarthy and Chahar failed.

Now, as India prepares for the upcoming Asia Cup, Yuzvendra Chahal opened up about the omission. “I never inquired as to why (the 2021 World Cup exclusion), as that is beyond my control. You regret missing out on the World Cup, but it is possible that they felt that someone else would have been more deserving and acceptable,” he said.

“I could control how I performed, and I did so throughout the second half of the IPL 2021 in the UAE,” added Chahal.

Yuzvendra Chahal again delivered an impactful performance in the latest IPL Season. Chahal played for the Rajasthan Royals under Sanju Samson. The spinner scalped a hatrick and a fifer against KKR this season. Moreover, he earned the purple cap being the highest wicket-taker of the season.

Chahal also opened up about how his bowling positions and tactics were motivated by the want to ultimately perform for India. “Rohit Bhaiya warned me before I left for the IPL that I would need to bowl at various points throughout the game, including the very end. Additionally, Rahul sir advised me to improve my fuller deliveries,” Chahal told.

“So when I went to the Rajasthan Royals, I spoke to Sanju and he supported me and said that I will bowl an over at the death, no matter how many runs I go for,” he added. Yuzvendra Chahal is going to UAE for the Asia Cup as a part of the Indian squad. And as Jasprit Bumrah misses out due to an injury, hopes are high from Chahal to scalp important wickets and provide a breakthrough to the team.
