Shubman Gill’s dismissal in Edgbaston upset Yuvraj Singh deeply: ‘Sachin used to get angry at himself, Gavaskar would walk out of nets’
Shubman Gill played an amazing knock of 269 against England on the second day of the Edgbaston Test which ended all doubts and questions. India scored a massive total of 587 runs in the first innings and Gill laid the foundation for it with his big innings. The pitch was a bit easy but Gill showed how to stay focused and not waste a good chance. Jaiswal scored 87, Jadeja made 89 and Washington Sundar gave a useful contribution of 42 runs but it was Gill’s daddy hundred that made the real impact.
Gill did everything right except one thing which broke Yuvraj Singh’s heart

Shubman Gill’s innings was almost perfect but when he was close to scoring 300 he made one mistake. Before tea India’s score was 564 for 7 and Gill was batting on 269. Harry Brook said something about 290 and Gill smiled but got out in the next over. He was batting well with Akash Deep and looked ready to reach 300. But this one small mistake stopped him from making history.
Yuvraj and Yograj both felt this was a big mistake
While cricket fans were praising Gill’s knock Yograj Singh had a different view. He said that getting out after being well set is like committing a crime. His son Yuvraj Singh also felt the same pain.
Yograj said in a talk with ANI that Yuvraj is now sharing his knowledge with other players. Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep have trained under him. He said that when Gill was on 200 he expected him to stay not out at 250. When a player is set and still gets out it hurts. Yuvraj is feeling the same. When you are not out at 200 or 250 or even 300 all your mistakes get covered. Gill has worked a lot on his top hand.
Even legends always kept checking themselves
Yograj also said that learning never stops. He shared how India’s top players used to treat their mistakes seriously. Yuvraj and Gautam Gambhir know how to build good players. These players will scold you even if you score runs or take wickets. Sachin Tendulkar used to get angry at himself. Sunil Gavaskar used to leave the nets if he got out. Big players become great because they learn from their mistakes and study what went wrong. Gill can do even bigger things. He can score 300 or 400. If Brian Lara can score 500 not out then we can do it too.
His technique and hard work are clearly visible
Yograj also shared a detail about Gill’s batting technique. He said that earlier Gill had some issue with his right hand but three days ago Yuvraj told him that it has improved a lot. Gill is working on his cover drives and his head position is perfect. The best part is that he is always making small changes to improve. That is why he is looking magical at the crease.
Final thoughts: Shubman Gill Edgbaston innings won hearts but one small mistake cost him a big record
Gill’s knock showed that he is a new age leader for India. But getting out just 31 runs short of 300 not only upset fans but also hurt Yuvraj Singh. What both Yuvraj and Yograj said makes one thing very clear. When a player is set and still gets out it is a big mistake. Gill has shown that he is ready for big challenges. With a bit more patience he can soon be among world cricket’s record holders.
