2020 Uber Cup: Thailand beats India 5-0, tops Group B

Well, kind of reality check for The Indian Team consisting of young players, as they faced a team with players in the Top Half of the World Ranking. Thailand dominated throughout the tie as they defeated India 5-0 in the 2020 Uber Cup, held in Aarhus, Denmark.

India has won their previous two games; 3-2 against Spain & 4-1 against Scotland. Meanwhile, Thailand had beat both Scotland and Spain by 5-0.

And with this result, Thailand finish at top of Group B with India finishing second in their last group stage match. With only the top two teams from each group advancing into the knockout round; Thailand and India have booked their 2020 Uber Cup quarter-finals spot.

As Saina Nehwal is injured after the encounter against Spain where she had retired from the 1st match. India’s Line-up against a tough opponent like Thailand only consists of one experienced pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy, accompanied by young players. Sikki Reddy faced the Thai pair ranked 8th in the world Jongkolphan Kititharakul/ Rawinda Prajongjai. The Thai duo won in two straight games 21-16, 21-12 as the match lasted for 43 minutes. Hence, Thailand 2-0 India.

Well, the 2nd Women’s Singles confirmed Thailand’s victory as they lead by 3-0. It wasn’t easy for Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan as India’s Aditi Bhatt gave a tough fight as the match went into a decider. The Thai ranked 13th in the world won the match by 21-16, 18-21, 21-15 as it lasted for about an hour. As a result, Thailand 3-0 India.

The 2nd Women’s Doubles is next as Thailand’s Puttita Supajirakul/Sapsiree Taerattanachai ranked 22nd was up against Treesa Jolly/Gayathri Gopichand of India. The pair from Thailand, won in two straight games 21-17, 21-16 in about forty-eight minutes. Thus, Thailand 4-0 India.

Meanwhile, the last fixture of the tie is the 3rd Women’s Singles, where the 16-year-old from India Tasnim Mir faced Thailand’s Supanida Katethong. The 33rd Ranked Supanida Katethong won in two straight games 21-19, 21-15 as the match lasted for about 40 minutes. With this, Thailand 5-0 India.

As a result, Thailand won 5-0 against India in the Group B encounter of the 2020 Uber Cup.
