5 FPL Mistakes to Avoid This Season

Whether you’re a FPL veteran or just starting out, there are several mistakes that we always make when we set a team in the Fantasy Premier League. FPL is the battleground where you predict the most performing team based on your maths, studies, stats or just your plain guts.

The Fantasy Premier League season is back, and so is the weekly cycle of hope, heartbreak, and rage-quitting. Whether you’re chasing mini-league glory or just trying to avoid finishing below your clueless uncle who captains his goalkeeper every week, here are some of the biggest FPL mistakes you should absolutely avoid.

Seriously, don’t be that manager.

  1. Making Early Transfers – The gap between gameweeks is usually around 5-6 days. You have plenty of time to think through your transfer moves and wait for potential injury news or team updates. The only real benefit of an early transfer is catching a price rise, which is sometimes useful, but not worth the risk every week.
  2. Spending Too Much Money On The Bench – Most of the time, your bench players won’t be needed. With only £100M to build your squad, your priority should be maximizing your starting 11. Fill your bench with “enablers”, rotation defenders or a budget midfielder/forward to keep your bench functional.

  3. Panicking After a Bad Start – A poor opening few Gameweeks doesn’t define your season. Don’t make emotional transfers or chase points out of frustration. Try to reassess your team, and consider whether a Wildcard or a patient strategy is the better plan. FPL is a marathon, not a sprint.
  4. Unnecessary wasting your Chips – Chips should be saved when you can best maximize your points, not when other managers are using them. Make a plan on when to use the chips.
  5. Letting others make decisions for you – This even includes us. We’ll always try to help you with our tips/advices, but in the end, your team is your team. Use content creators and other managers for inspiration, but make your own decisions.
